Couples 2-day Intensive

Our intensive couples therapy is a 2-day program designed for couples who are:
  • looking for a boost in their current therapy work
  •  wanting to address specific areas of their relationship in a highly focused atmosphere
  •  a couple that keeps getting stuck in the same spots
  •  needing repair and healing from past or recent injuries and hurts.
  • motivated to take a preventative approach to strengthening their relationship
  • wanting to feel more resilient and empowered

The program is typically a total of 12 hours over two days spent with an EFT couples therapist. In this time together, couples can expect some of the following benefits to their relationship:

  • Help partners better understand their own needs and emotions, as well as their partner’s needs and emotions
  • Start having important, honest conversations in more open and vulnerable ways
  • Begin identifying problem areas more clearly and how to deescalate from them
  • Help understand and tend to the core emotions, negative narratives, and needs that contribute to painful patterns
  • Begin healing from past hurts and injuries
  • Improve connection and intimacy
  • Start to build a more secure foundation for your relationship
  • Learn to maintain a lasting and loving connection
The 2-day  intensive program is based on Emotionally Focused Therapy, which is supported by empirical evidence and research. EFT is also one of the top recommended couple therapy modalities as recommended by the American Psychological Association.
It has been proven that EFT can effectively move couples from disconnection and distress to connection and intimacy.

What to expect:

Couples will first set up a free consultation with the therapist  to make sure the Intensive Therapy Program is a good fit. Then the 2 session days will be selected. These are typically weekdays, but Saturdays are available depending on the therapist’s schedule. The 2-day schedule is as follows:

Day 1

  • Morning orientation and assessment, including individual sessions- 2 hours
  • Late morning session- 1 hour
  • Lunch- 1 hour
  • Afternoon session one- 1 hour
  • Afternoon session two- 1 hour

Day 2

  • Morning session one- 1.5 hours
  • Morning session two- 1.5 hours
  • Lunch- 1 hour
  • Afternoon session one- 1 hour
  • Afternoon session two – 40 min
  • Debrief and closure session- 20 min
*Brief breaks are taken between each session or as needed

*Light snacks and drinks will be provided

*Therapist will be available as needed throughout the two days

How to get the most out of your intensive therapy:

Read Dr. Sue Johnson’s Hold Me Tight ® book. This will give couples a common dialogue and will supplement the Intensive Therapy work.

Because of the intense nature of this two day program, it is recommended that couples approach it similar to a retreat. Plan ample time to rest and relax between the two  days and be sure to utilize self-care. Whether this means getting away together at a resort or hotel, going to your favorite restaurant or simply creating a restful environment at home, it is important that you both have space to regulate and recharge .

Since the intensive can bring up a lot of different feelings and emotions, it is highly recommended that couples arrange follow-up therapy sessions. This can often be with the same therapist that is guiding you through the intensive program, or with an outside referral which we can provide. It is important to set this up prior to the intensive so you have support available immediately after.

Come with an open mind and an open heart.

The intensive program is not appropriate for couples when:

  • There is an active, ongoing affair
  • One or both partners are struggling with an active addiction
  • There is active intimate partner violence or abuse
  • Both partners are not committed to the same core goals or to working on the relationship
  • Being in an intimate, close space for long periods is triggering or traumatic

If you have questions or concerns about these criteria and whether this form of therapy is right for you, it can be discussed in more detail during the free consultation call. If it is determined that the intensive is not a good fit for you at this time, we will help connect you to resources and support that you need and deserve.

Cost

$2000 – 3000

A common concern about the 2-day intensive is whether it is “worth it” financially. We encourage couples to consider the cost of NOT working on your relationship. In a time when the average cost of a divorce is +$15,000, we believe that investing now in your relationship is in fact worth it both financially and relationally. If a 2-day intensive is not feasible, we also offer 4-hour and 1-day intensives.

It has been found that completing the 2-day intensive is equivalent to around 5-6 months of weekly couples therapy, making it not only effective, but also efficient.

Couples Workshop

We offer a 2-day couples workshop throughout the year for small or large groups of couples hosted by our highly skilled therapists.
This workshop format is a combination of learning in a large group setting and then applying specific learning points in break out sessions with your partner.
This workshop is derived from Dr. Sue Johnson’s popular Hold Me Tight ® book and from established research in attachment theory.

Therapists will work closely with participants to help them address the following:

  • Reach a deeper connection with your partner
  • Access your emotions and share more openly
  • Better understand and break the negative patterns of conflict in your relationship
  • Begin the process of healing past and current emotional injuries
  • Improve intimacy with your partner

If you would like more information or are interested in hosting a Hold Me Tight ® workshop or Created for Connection workshop (for Christian Couples) at your venue, please email Nick Puchalski, LMFT at Nick@restoredcw.com.

EMDR

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It is an evidence-based form of therapy that involves moving your eyes in specific patterns while you process traumatic events or memories. It is used to help clients reduce physical and emotional symptoms that come from life disturbances. EMDR can not only reduce and alleviate symptoms, it can greatly reduce the overall time it might take someone in talk therapy to fully process their trauma.
When an individual experiences a disturbing event, it can often get ‘stuck’ in the body causing painful and unwanted symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression, night terrors, physical pain, anger, dissociation, and more). EMDR is able to access these stuck spots, and brings healing to the body and brain.
EMDR research shows that single-trauma events are highly likely to be fully healed and those with multiple-trauma (complex trauma) events are 77% likely to find healing and be PTSD free at the end of their EMDR therapy. The length of time needed doing EMDR differs from client to client, and depends on the severity and complexity of the trauma(s). However, it has been shown that even 3-4 EMDR sessions can bring positive and lasting relief. For more complex traumas one can expect 12+ sessions to find symptom relief and reduction of PTSD.

You can read more about EMDR at emdria.org.

EFT

EFT stands for emotionally focused therapy. It is an evidence-based form of therapy developed in the 1980’s that combines attachment and humanistic theories. EFT is founded on the belief that humans are wired for connection and seeks to heal and strengthen the bonds within the self and between individuals. It helps clients with emotional regulation and improves their ability to be accessible, responsive, and engaged with their partner. Following the EFT model allows partners to interrupt and better navigate their negative relationship cycle, moving towards increased connection and a deeper more meaningful relationship.
Studies have shown that 90% of couples who choose EFT experience significant improvements in the relationship and  70-75% are successfully able to move out of distress into full recovery on a consistent basis.
You can read more about EFT at ICEEFT.com.

IFS

IFS stands for internal family systems, which is a form of talk therapy that emphasizes the idea of the core Self and the multiple “parts” that make it up. IFS was developed by Richard Schwartz, a marriage and family therapist who observed a certain pattern in his patients. Many of his patients would describe these different and often conflicted parts within themselves.
These parts, or subpersonalities, that are wounded, rejected, or in conflict with each other or the core Self, can be the cause of many mental health conditions and symptoms.
Potential symptoms of wounded or conflicted internal parts include anxiety, depression, feelings of anger/frustration/shame, physical pain or health issues, phobias, addiction, and more.

IFS also holds the belief that there are “no bad parts.” The goal of therapy is to help all parts coexist and to decrease the intensity and reactivity of the wounded parts in order to more easily access the confident, compassionate, and creative whole Self within.

You can read more about IFS at ifs-institute.com.
